Zlatomir Fung’s career has soared since he became the youngest winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019. ‘The technical brilliance is worn very lightly, but boy is it there when you listen out for it,’ wrote Presto Music of his debut album, which opened with the cellist’s Fantasy on Janáček’s Jenůfa. Janáček launches the cellist’s latest Wigmore Hall programme, in the form of depictions of scenes from a Russian short story, while Fung’s A Sailor’s Day Off speaks of its composer’s versatility and sense of humour.
