Alec Frank-Gemmill horn; Daniel Grimwood piano
Echoes of rousing horn calls and the Romantic images they evoke resound in Alec Frank-Gemmill’s lunchtime recital. Lamento d’Orfeo, the first of Volker David Kirchner’s Poemi from 1986, recalls fragments drawn from Mahler’s Seventh Symphony and elsewhere in its visceral portrait of the sorrow of Orpheus, while York Bowen’s exquisitely crafted Sonata from 1937 treats the horn like a wordless voice, expressive and intense in its delivery of heartfelt themes.
