The Renaissance revolution: Faces, faith and display

Join tutor Siân Walters as we explore the artistic revolution of the Renaissance, revealing how painters from van Eyck to Leonardo da Vinci transformed the language of art. Through developments in oil painting, perspective and the revival of classical ideals, these artists reimagined how the world could be represented. We consider the emergence of the artist as intellectual, inventor and creative force, while moving between cities such as Florence, Bruges and Burgos to examine how practices of display - past and present - continue to shape our understanding of Renaissance art. Across five sessions, participants will encounter key figures such as Botticelli, Masaccio and Dürer, gaining deeper insight into the contexts in which their masterpieces were conceived, created and experienced. This is a stand alone course, but can also be taken as part of 'The Story of Painting'
