Saturday Night Fever

The defining feature of the disco era is resplendent with mirror balls, jumpsuits and finger pointing, but underneath lies a very dark tale of class inequality and toxic masculinity. Disco’s glitz and glamour is a cruel contrast to the realities of life in Brooklyn, where Tony Manero works a soul-sucking job between stints at the club. In his world, women are objects and boys will be boys. Trapped in a toxic environment whose only allure is the bright lights of the dancefloor, Tony’s fight to defy the patterns laid out for him is brought to vibrant, hip swinging life by an incomparable Travolta. Contains scenes of sexual assault and themes of suicide. The screening of Saturday Night Fever on Wednesday 16 September will be introduced by Ruby McGuigan, BFI Programme Development Manager.
