(Sunless) Chris Marker’s celebrated film essay travels the world as it meditates on the nature of human memory. Marker’s fascination with memory reaches its apotheosis in this celebrated film essay, which sees a female narrator reading a letter describing the journey of fictitious travelling cameraman Sandor Krasna. Primarily using footage from Japan and Guinea-Bissau (some of the latter was shot by Sarah Maldoror in 1974 - on the eve of the country’s independence from Portugal - for an unfinished film about the revolutionary poet and leader Amílcar Cabral), this ‘home movie’ is a testament to Marker’s spirited, unceasingly curious imagination.
