Sally Potter brings Virginia Woolf’s novel, a study of gender roles through history, to the screen with an energy and level of invention that’s matched by Tilda Swinton’s career-defining performance. Orlando, a young noble favoured by Queen Elizabeth I is given an estate on the understanding that he will never age. With each century Orlando retains his youth, until an unexpected transformation changes his destiny.
