Lucky

A lovely companion piece to the documentary Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction, the penultimate film to feature the actor has obvious parallels with his own life. Released in the US just days after Stanton’s death, aged 91, Lucky is at once a love letter to the actor and a meditation on mortality, loneliness, spirituality and human connection. Stanton plays the titular character, a cantankerous, self-reliant 90-year-old atheist. Set in a small rural California town and featuring an ensemble cast of eccentric characters, Lucky is a warm, witty and understated feature debut by Carroll Lynch, an actor who has had his own fair share of eccentric, offbeat and subtly crafted characters.
