Cool Hand Luke

One of Paul Newman’s best-loved roles, this anti-authoritarian tale set on a chain gang in the American south briefly unites Harry Dean Stanton with Dennis Hopper. This early and relatively brief appearance is significant because it represents the other talent Stanton possessed in spades: crooning. (He would go on to sing with Dylan and Joan Baez in the sprawling 1978 documentary hybrid Renaldo and Clara.) In Rosenberg’s beloved prison drama, Stanton plays Tramp, the guitar-strumming troubadour who leads his fellow fugitives through renditions of Ain’t No Grave and Just a Closer Walk with Thee.
