The sole feature from seminal music video director and aesthetic powerhouse Hype Williams features Nas and DMX as friends driven apart by a life of crime. Two best friends, with both feet in the criminal underworld, bounce from drug deal to club to murder and back again, as they navigate the emerging gaps in their morality. The y2k-music-video aesthetic was defined by Williams, who brings all his visual flair and bold instincts to his only feature. Starring two of hip-hop’s biggest names and oozing style, the film’s plot is mostly irrelevant when this world, and the people who populated it, looks so good. The screening of Belly on Wednesday 30 September will be introduced by heritage and music professional Naz Hamdi.
